What We Believe

Bible_side_featheredAs a Southern Baptist Church, a summary of our beliefs can be found in a document called The Baptist Faith and Message 2000.

Here are some of our core beliefs:
1. The Bible is our sole authority on all matters of faith and practice.
All Scripture isinspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness”
– 2 Timothy 3:16

We believe in the inerrancy, sufficiency, and profitability of all Scripture.

2. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;”
– Ephesians 2:8

“that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;  for with the heart a person believes,]resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
– Romans 10:9-10

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”
– John 14:6

3. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are two ordinances given to the church by Christ by which we proclaim the gospel.

Baptism
“But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.”
– Acts 8:12

The word “baptize” in Greek means to “dip under water.”  Therefore, the baptism recognized by the church is believer’s baptism by immersion.

Lord’s Supper
“For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”
– I Corinthians 11:22-26

At Mount Vernon, we strive to celebrate the Lord’s Supper at least four times a year.

4. The church is the body of Christ where each member must serve and support the body.
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;  and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;  and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.”
– I Corinthians 12:4

“If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.   Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”
– I Corinthians 12:26-27

5. The Great Commission is the driving force behind the church’s mission.

The Great Commission is the target of the church.  Our prayer is that God uses us to reach Watauga/Ashe County, North Carolina, North America, and the nations with the gospel.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you [f]always, even to the end of the age.”
